Ford F-150, Edge, Explorer To Get EcoBoost Engines

The EcoBoost engine range was first introduced by Ford in the 2010 Lincoln MKS, but the automaker recently announced it would launch three new EcoBoost engine types by the end of the year.

The EcoBoost engines allows Ford to offer customers similar power to larger, traditional engines, but the smaller displacement and improved fuel combustion do play a large part in cutting fuel costs. Additionally, using an EcoBoost engine also helps reduce vehicle weight, which is an important step in Ford’s goal to remove 250-750 pounds per vehicle to further increase fuel economy.

“We are trying to get in front of the pack in leveraging EcoBoost for fuel economy,” said Dan Kapp, Ford’s director of powertrain research and advanced engineering. “It’s going to be a trend in the industry, and we can’t rest on our laurels for one minute. We are going to keep wringing more efficiency out of EcoBoost.”
The 1.6-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost will arrive in Europe, powering the C-Max people mover, while the 2.0-liter EcoBoost will power the next-generation Explorer SUV along with the 2011 Edge crossover. The Ford’s F-150 will get a 3.5-liter V-6 that Ford claims will provide better fuel economy than existing V-8s, but with similar towing capacity and power.
